Small Ensemble Project

Chamber music is one of the most significant experiences a musician can have. The independence learned, as well as the ensemble skills of balance, blend, and tuning developed in a small ensemble experience changes the way students think as players in the large band experience. During Quarter 2, small ensembles will be formed in 10th – 12th grade band classes and will have one required coaching session with Mr. Jarvis December – January. Students will rehearse as a small ensemble on a weekly basis either during class and/or on their own. The project is designed to lead up to a final performance by each ensemble.

Two options for a graded performance will be available to the student ensembles from Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band:

1. Solo and Ensemble Contest to be held at Lakeville South HS on Saturday, January 28, 2012

The MSHSL Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held at Lakeville South HS on Saturday, January 28, 2012 this year from 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. All band students 10th – 12th grade will be eligible to participate this year (9th graders currently studying privately with an instructor will be allowed to participate as a soloist if they like.) Ensembles allowed to attend this contest by Mr. Jarvis will receive an automatic “A” for their Quarter 3 jury performance for Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band. Students interested in performing a solo at this contest should make that selection now so they can get a jump start on learning the piece with their private teacher or with Mr. Jarvis. All students participating in contest will pay small fees still for both ensemble participation and solo participation (past fees have been $5 per member of each ensemble / $10 for each solo) – accompanists are also available for a fee of $30 and can be arranged with Mr. Jarvis if needed.

2. Quarter 3 Small Ensemble Jury with Mr. Jarvis

Student ensembles from Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band not attending the MSHSL Solo and Ensemble Contest will be required to perform their Quarter 3 jury performance for Mr. Jarvis the week of January 30 – February 3 the week after contest. Students will be “judged” with the same evaluation sheet used at the contest and will be given a grade based on their performance level.

In addition, some ensembles may be asked to perform for PB&J, and/or for the "Pops" concert on March 6th.
